Chapter Five

The sound of a low wolf whistle distracted Jed from his work, and he directed his attention to Lon, who was standing near one of the reception area windows. “What?”

“Come here quick, you should see this,” Lon urged, motioning to Jed.

Curious, Jed complied. A look out the window revealed a voluptuous brunette drawing what appeared to be a covered cake plate from the passenger seat of her car. She hitched the shoulder strap of her purse a bit higher and straightened her skirt. A short walk took her toward the front of the house, where she disappeared from view. A moment later, the sound of a knock could be heard.

“Wow, nice. Jamie’s a fast worker if he’s already got her on the hook. Didn’t you say he’s only been in town a couple of weeks?”

“Yeah, that’s right.” With Lon’s words came a trickle of unease. Jed’s wolf stirred. The wolf gave no indication of wanting to physically emerge, but Jed’s senses heightened as they did before a change. Sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch enhanced. It was like an indistinct tune suddenly changed into a glorious symphony played by a full orchestra. The difference was momentarily disorienting, and Jed took a breath to steady himself and absorb the change.

Walking away, he concentrated on hearing what was being said in the living room. While he experienced a slight qualm about eavesdropping, Jed shook it off. Where his mate was concerned, the wolf didn’t give a damn about socially correct human behaviors. Jed couldn’t catch every word, but after Jamie greeted her, the woman said something about dropping by with a cake to welcome the new student and family to town.

Jed had to assume she worked for the school and probably met Jamie when he enrolled Jack several days ago. That part was clear, but the cake thing, seriously? There was no way Jed was going to believe she did so with every family enrolling a new student in school. Jed inhaled and let the scents filtering in tell their story.

The woman clearly had an ulterior motive. Jed could smell it.

The air was laden with various scents, including testosterone, adrenaline, and pheromones. When the woman had first appeared, Lon had pumped out testosterone like an overheated steam engine. When she had disappeared from sight, the aroused male funk began to dissipate. Jed had to assume it was because the woman was no longer visible. Lon was apparently an out of sight, out of mind kind of guy.

Because it was so prevalent about the house, Jamie’s scent was very much in evidence. Always a combination of things, there were two at the moment calling attention to themselves. Jamie’s testosterone, musky and male, and his adrenaline, tart with a bitter tang, were especially strong.

Jamie found the woman attractive, but she also made him nervous. The woman though, from the moment Jed caught her scent, her pheromone levels had continued to rise. Jed knew pheromones could signal many things, but the woman’s scent revealed no stress, and this particular chemical signature held no territorial connotations.
